About us

ADDHU, Portuguese NGO, sprung from the will to fight for the liberation of Burma and Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi.  After having stayed in this country for a period of time in 1997, its founder, the writer and university teacher Laura Vasconcellos, was firmly determined upon her return home to fulfil the demands she received during her visit to “be our voice outside”.  She wrote a book based on her personal experience, published in 2005 by Guimarães Editores, “Do Outro lado do Mundo – Cartas da Birmânia”. From the publication of this book onwards she has developed her activity on behalf of  human rights in Burma: she collected signatures for a letter addressed to Burma’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, on a first stage, and later to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, M. Kofi Annan; she was interviewed for the Portuguese television stations RTPN and TVI, where she was able to talk about the social and political situation of that country and the urgent need of action to be taken on behalf of the people of Burma; she was also interviewed for the newspaper Jornal de Letras ; last July 2006 she was invited by the organizers of the Second Forum on Human Rights in Nantes, France  to participate in this forum;  but working  in close contact with the people on the streets, passing on information and creating a sense of responsibility and awareness regarding the situation of the people of Burma and the Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi have been the central actions of the founder of the newly created ADDHU, and she hopes to further develop  these activities in other countries of Asia and the rest of the world.

ADDHU has by social object  the conception, execution and support to programmes and projects of information, education and development, made to promote liberties and protection of the citizen’s rights, in the full respect for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Respecting its main goals, ADDHU will develop the following activities:

 Addhu’s Activities  Report 2007

Since its beginning as an NGO, in March 2007, ADDHU has developed in particular projects of Cooperation with developing countries. In the field of Education for Development there are already projects being prepared for 2008.

Cooperation with developing countries

            Projects already accomplished:

                        - Nepal (Chitwan rural areas)

It has been developed a programme in Chitwan rural areas, in Nepal, where prevails poverty and a weak social and economical development, thickened by political instability, consequence from a recent civil war. The war is now over, but the guarantees of political, social and economical rights that exist aren’t yet enough. This programme, still on course, has the following primary goals:

a) Improve the population living conditions;

b) Promote the rural zones development;

c) Contribute to reduce poverty and asymmetries between South and North.

In cooperation with the NGO Rural Community Development Program (RCDP), whose head office is in Nepal, ADDHU performs the following activities:

1.       Support the children of the Asna Orphanage in Rampur, Chitwan. ADDHU’s mission has given them scholar equipment, medicines, clothes and bed covers. The orphanage has received also a refrigerator given by ADDHU.

2.       Reconstruction of the Karki’s house in a small village near Rampur. ADDHU has given a new home for Prakash Karki and is family of 7.

Projects in progress:

            - Nepal (Chitwan rural areas)

1.       Selection of other families who live in extreme poverty conditions in order to provide them with new houses.

2.       Starting a micro-credit programme.

3.       Training and selecting volunteers with different academic formations to give assistance to the children of the Asna Orphanage, beginning in January 2008.

- kenya

1.         Last October 2007, Laura Vasconcellos, ADDHU’s President, went to Kenya to report the urgent needs and choose the target areas on witch humanitarian aid was most needed. The Kenyan NGO Capital Youth Association (CYCA) asked for ADDHU’s assistance in this matter and became Cooperative Partner.

2.         The report about the current situation in Kenya, sent from CYCA to ADDHU, considers that the most important action fields were:

a)       Provide food and urgent primary goods, mainly in poor neighbourhoods and orphanages;

b)       Sent volunteers to the areas like orphanages, schools and medical day care centres

c)       Organizing prevention campaigns and information about diseases like HIV/Aids, malaria and campaigns against drug use;

d)       Provide feminine hygiene products to girls of the most problematic areas, awakening to the importance of the hygiene cares;

e)       Study the possibilities of using the natural resources in a sustainable way, specially water, a scarce resource in several areas.

3.         During the trip, sanitary-pads were given to slums young women. These sanitary-pads were granted by the Renova company and trough campaigns near the Portuguese community in supermarkets Pingo Doce.

4.         The ADDHU/CYCA Center for Orphaned Children is being created, near Nairobi. This orphanage will host orphan children from Nairobi’s slums, and many of them are HIV/Aids infected. The Centre’s first rent has been paid and the CYCA’s staff is preparing the building to open as soon as possible

5.         A partnership with Foundation for Orphaned Children (FOC) was established, which will allow the development of a sponsor program to several children from the Nairobi’s slums. Trough monthly donations, anyone can be engaged in the development of an orphan. There will be also the possibility of sponsoring the children who live in Orphanage.

6.         The fundraising programme “Gifts of Hope” aims to improve the living conditions of these children. Trough this programme, it will be possible to contribute to provide the ADDHU/CYCA Centre for Orphaned Children with necessary materials and support the children. Each contribution has a specific destination (health products, education materials…), chosen by the donor.

This project puts together a theatre play written by Laura Vasconcellos, about the drama lived by youth and children in Cambodja, Taiwan, Laos, Vietnam and Burma, victims of sexual exploitation and human beings traffic. It is ADDHU’s wish to invite Somaly Mam, founder of the NGO AFESIP to be present on the play premiere in Lisbon, occasion in which she will be able to address some words concerning this cruel reality of her country. The author rights of the play will be totally given to AFESIP through ADDHU, and we also hope to have the audience and theatre professionals support. The play will also allow informing people about the sexual exploitation and human beings traffic in several Asian countries problems.

            - Organization of photography exhibitions, by Laura Vasconcellos, in order to raise funds and to inform about the Human Rights violations in the world.

Beyond the announced projects, ADDHU doesn’t forget that Human Rights violations are constant. Therefore, ADDHU will also develop other actions in order to identify these violations and to try to prevent or eradicate them. These actions include preparatory visits to developing countries, namely Asian, as one of the reasons ADDHU was born was to support the Aung Sun Suu Kyi cause in Burma, in order to develop humanitarian help projects.

            ADDHU believes living conditions, as bad as they can be, can also be changed and dignified, if we act together with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Dear Sir

As a citizen of the world and a supporter of freedom, justice and democracy, I would like to express my deep concern for the present situation of the Nobel Prize Winner, Daw Aung Suu Kyi, whose military junta that rules her country is threatening, in this very moment, with a statement where you can read that her days "are numbered," and she is "heading for a tragic end."

We also plead for all burmese citizens, mostly the ethnic minorities as the Karen, Shan and others, living under a military regime that constantly violates the most basic human rights: The relocation policy must end; the use of child soldiers must end; the rape of women must end; the imprisonment without a trial must end; the lack of freedom must end; the lack of justice and fairness must end; the home detention of the Nobel Prize Winner and true and rightfully leader of the country Aung San Suu Kyi must end; torture must end; executions must end; forced labor must end; trafficking people must end; religion discrimination must end.

 Abuses by the SPDC military are widespread and the burmese live in the darkness of tyranny -- but the light of freedom shines in their hearts. They want their liberty and it is our duty, the so called people of the free world, to lend a hand to our brothers and sisters from Burma/Myanmar.

As you well know the situation worsens every day and people and suffering. A lot has been spoken about it in the last months, but unfortunately nothing as been done and the military government of Myanmar is laughing at our faces. Without a decisive Security Council action the killings and abuses will not stop.

We understand the pressure put on to the UN with this terrible crisis in the Middle East, but please sir don’t let down that extraordinary woman that so much has given to the world as an example of true and right values.

I urge you, sire, to take action in order to change the situation and renew our faith in the human values that we are supposed to live by.

Thank you
